Ch. 1: You Saved Me
A smile forms on my face when I spot the newborn kits. One of their names is Sagekit, I believe. I overheard one of them being named Cloverkit. What a pretty name for a pretty cat...wait, why did I just say that!? Ahem. Anyway. I love my mum, Midnightsong, and stuff, but she's not always around. Not like that's a bad thing! Being unsupervised gives me a chance to explore and be, y'know, brave. I quickly groom my black pelt and pad into the camp clearing. I love the feeling of fresh, wet air in the morning. I stop when I reach the streams that encircle WaterClan camp. I've never dared to go farther. I decide I want to feel water. I dip my paw in and quickly draw it back when the ice cold liquid splashed my fur. I examine my paw and noticed the glossy shine from the water. Cheerfully, I dunk my head into the water, draw it out, and let my hair slick back. But now I want to swim. I bound out of camp and stop at the lake. I wade into the water. I feel stupid when I realize I don't know how to swim! But by now I'm in deep water, and I'm sinking, sinking, sinking....
A white blurr leaps into the water and grabs my scruff. My heart almost stops. Cloverkit! But she can't swim either. I feel her sinking by the time I reach the surface. I kick my legs as I go down and grab the young kit's scruff. I pull her to the bank and we cough the water out of our mouths. Feeling embarrassed, I quickly mew, "Sorry for almost drowning and having you rescue me but then you almost drowned and I had to save you. I risked both of our lives, and I feel really stupid right now." Cloverkit giggles and thanks me, accepting my apology. We race back to camp after a deep conversation. I know how to swim now. I know how to feel passion for somebody. I know how to have a heart.
